The “Golden Spice” Miracle Worker

Turmeric is a culinary spice often recognized by its distinct, yellow-gold color. In fact, many people already have it in their pantry; but did you know that this spice has many other scientifically-proven health benefits? Turmeric has the potential to prevent cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s, among many other major health concerns. It has been thought to lessen the symptoms of depression and help ease arthritis. This powerful spice has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, meaning that it also serves as a great ingredient when incorporated into your beauty routine! Everyone wants radiant, beautiful skin, am I right?

Turmeric in beauty products

Studies have found that curcumin, the main component of turmeric, is responsible for improving a slew of skin concerns. Some of these concerns being: a decrease in visible sun damage, fading scars, reducing wrinkles, gently exfoliating, brightening complexion, as well as clearing up and preventing acne. When taken orally, it can also reduce the breakdown of collagen in the skin, making it the ultimate anti-aging ingredient. Many big name companies have recently launched skincare products with turmeric as the star ingredient; and rightfully so!

According to Kavita Mariwalla, a New York dermatologist, “it can prevent conditions, including skin redness, hair loss and cardiovascular disease, which are caused by inflammation.” All of these amazing benefits can make it an essential addition to your skincare routine. Be sure to do a little research and check out your local beauty counter for all your turmeric-based skincare needs!

Turmeric Face Mask

DIY Turmeric Face Mask

If you’re looking for an at-home remedy then try out this easy, Do It Yourself face mask! The best part is that it only requires 3 ingredients that you might already have on hand- turmeric (1 teaspoon), honey (1 1/2 tablespoons) and whole milk (1/2 tablespoon). Whenever working with turmeric, make sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stained as turmeric tends to dye anything it comes in contact with. Follow these easy steps for radiant skin:

  1. To get your mask on, combine all three ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
  2. Apply generously to your face with an old makeup brush.
  3. Relax and allow the mask to do its thing for 20-30 minutes. Make sure to take a maskie (mask selfie) while you wait! (If you masked and didn’t Instagram it, did you really do it?!)
  4. Rinse with water and enjoy your beautiful skin!
